Boaters Need to Be Their Own Best Lifeguard

Seven Swimming Safety Tips

ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 25, 2012 – Boating and swimming go hand-in-hand, but unlike a public pool or beach, boaters can’t count on a lifeguard to watch over them. As this summer’s sweltering heat wave drives more boaters to dive into the deep blue, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety has these seven swimming tips:
1. Always ensure the engine is off. The best way to do this is to remove the key from the ignition, leaving it in plain view so everyone knows it won’t start.
2. At marinas, stray electric current from poorly maintained boat electrical and shore power systems can kill swimmers. Three separate marina electrocution incidents over the July 4 holiday left four kids and one adult dead, and injured several others who had tried to come to their rescue.
3. Never dive in head first before confirming the water depth. Mistakenly diving into a shallow, mucky bottom may simply leave you bruised and looking more like the creature of black lagoon. However, diving head first into hard sandy bottom, rock or underwater obstruction could put you in a wheelchair. Deploy a boarding ladder first and ease yourself in to confirm water depth.
4. Never swim alone. If you’re in the middle of the lake and swimming alone, there’s no safety backstop in case you have a problem – which could be nearby boaters unaware of you.
5. It’s always a good idea to have a life jacket or floating seat cushion close by (and tied to the boat) that swimmers can easily reach while in the water, or simply hang a dock line over the side. And even if you’re a good swimmer, wearing a life jacket while in the water makes you nearly drown-proof.
6. Never swim under a boat’s swim platform or near any boat with the engine running. You could strike the running gear or fall victim to carbon monoxide poisoning – it only takes a few whiffs of CO to leave swimmers incapacitated or unconscious. Also stay away from generator exhaust ports.
7. When boats and swimmers collide, boats always win. You’re simply asking for trouble if you swim in navigation channels or marinas. Also never swim in area with strong river or tidal currents, which can swiftly sweep swimmers away from the boat.

Ethanol-Blend Purchase Mandate

Courtesy of the American Motorcyclist Association
Wednesday, August 08, 2012
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will require all consumers to buy at least four gallons of gasoline from certain gas pumps after the new E15 ethanol-gasoline blend is introduced into the market, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

The EPA revealed the requirement to the AMA in a letter dated Aug. 1, responding to AMA concerns that E15 -- a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume -- could be put in motorcycle and ATV gas tanks inadvertently when consumers use blender pumps. A blender pump dispenses different fuel blends through the same hose, and the vast majority of motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles in use today aren't designed to operate on E15 fuel.

"With E15 gasoline, our members who make a concerted effort to fuel their motorcycles or ATVs with E10-or-less gasoline may be unknowingly refueling with residual fuel left in the hose," Wayne Allard, AMA vice president for government relations, wrote in a June 20 letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson.

When the lights go out, it's more than just an inconvenience.  Power outages can result in financial loss due to spoiled food, lost work time, broken pipes and even water damage to building and furniture.  A quiet, reliable Honda generator can easily keep your family safe and secure through power-related emergencies.

Honda Inverter Technology
Computers & power-sensitive equipment require what is referred to as "clean power".  Clean power is electrical current that is consistent & has a stable "sine wave" or signal.  If lights in your home were being powered by a generator & there was a fluctuation in the power, you'd see the lights flicker - no problem!  If your computer was being powered by a generator and the voltage fluctuated, chances are your computer would shut down or interrupt the program you were working in.  Honda uses an inverter technology that takes raw power produced by the generator, passes it through a special microprocessor allowing you to safely run a computer or other sensitive equipment without fear of damage to the equipment.  Inverter technology is available on five Honda generators, designated by an "i" after the model number.

Eco-Throttle System

This system automatically adjusts engine speed to the optimum level based on the usage load.  This not only results in excellent fuel economy, but makes a quiet generator even quieter.  Eco-Throttle System is standard on all inverter models.

Home Power Backup
During power outages you should first provide sufficient light for the safety of your family.  If power is out for several hours, you will want to power your refrigerator & freezer.  The Honda 1000i A2 is perfect for lights, fans and TVs.  The 2000i can be used to power microwave ovens & other electrical cooking devices for meal preparation.  The Honda EU3000is inverter generator is ideal to power many types of appliances.  The Honda EM5000is will handle the above loads in addition to being a great choice for well water pumps!  You should consider having an appropriate manual transfer switch professionally installed in your home for added convenience & safety.  These days, electricians are very familiar with this technology.  We will gladly guide you to determine the best transfer switch to match your generator choice.
